What is EMF camp? To quote the website
“Electromagnetic Field is a non-profit camping festival for those with an inquisitive mind or an interest in making things: hackers, artists, geeks, crafters, scientists, and engineers. A temporary town of nearly three thousand like-minded people enjoying a long weekend of talks, performances, and workshops
on everything from blacksmithing to biometrics, chiptunes to computer security, high altitude ballooning to lockpicking, origami to democracy,
and online privacy to knitting.”
It’s easy to miss what’s going on in the world of technology when a lot of it doesn’t look like or sound like what we do there is a huge globally connected population of those who are hungry to learn about, try and develop things EMF camp occurs relatively locally and there is sub-sections which include radio and potential for them to find our hobby and take it up. Heather and others from the club went along to Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire here is Heathers report.
“I did my talk on “Amateur satellites on a Budget” to the EMF Camp 2024. The talk starts with an introduction about the challenges of receiving satellite communications – such as Doppler, knowing where and when they are going to be in range and some of the software needed to answer
these questions. I then covered setting up of a handy to handle the Doppler shifts and using it with a home made dual band Yagi antenna (wood and coat hangers) for 2m/70cm reception of the Leo bent-pipe transponders. There was also a bit about another coat hanger and wood antenna for receiving weather satellite images, some details of the radios on the ISS and finally covering some basics of how to get to/from the QO-100 Geostationary satellite with both narrow band and even touched on receiving Amateur TV images from it.”
